Criticism of Spanish Fort instructor Gene Ponder's AP Government class has generated a fresh debate on how much partisanship should be incorporated into a high school classroom.

Ponder supporters say he's been unfairly targeted. Parents, former teachers and the public criticized Spanish Fort high school instructor Gene Ponder on Thursday for what they say is his use of emphasizing right-wing ideologies while teaching his AP Government Class. Ponder is the same instructor whose summer reading list -- filled with right-wing authors and celebrities -- drew national attention.

Baldwin County Superintendent Eddie Tyler said some of the criticism amounted to "character assassination. Julia Coccaro, who filed a complaint with the Baldwin County School System in June alleging a culture of bias and discrimination, approached the School Board Thursday wanting an update.
