When she turned five her family moved to Framingham, Massachusetts. Christa studied American history and education in college at Framingham State University. In , she graduated and married her high school sweetheart, Steven McAuliffe. Christa was excited and prepared for her new job.
She began teaching American history and English to her junior high school students in Maryland. McAuliffe was a popular teacher.
Her students loved her because she was so enthusiastic and was able to make history understandable. She also liked to take her students on field trips. During her first few years teaching, Christa gave birth to her son, Scott, who was born in The couple had met and fallen in love during their high school days.
Around this time, McAuliffe began her career as an educator, teaching American history and English to junior high school students in Maryland. In , she and Steven welcomed a son, Scott. She landed a teaching job at a high school in Concord and gave birth to a second child, Caroline. In , when the first space shuttle circled the earth, McAuliffe made sure her students took notes.
McAuliffe was an extraordinary teacher with a dream of being a passenger on the space shuttle, so when NASA announced a contest to take a teacher into space, she jumped at the chance and applied. McAuliffe won the contest, beating out more than 11, other applicants. Vice President George H. Bush delivered the good news at a special ceremony at the White House, stating that McAuliffe was going to be the "first private citizen passenger in the history of space flight. After NASA announced the selection of McAuliffe, her whole community rallied behind her, treating her as a hometown hero when she returned from the White House.
As for McAuliffe, she saw the space mission as a chance to go on the ultimate field trip. She believed that by participating in the mission she could help students better understand space and how NASA works. One of the more difficult aspects of the program was leaving her family for extensive training. More than any other year, was to be the year of the space shuttle, with 15 flights scheduled.
But, let us go back a little bit to completely lay down their relationship. Back when Christa and Steve were in high school — Marian High School in Framingham, Massachusetts — they met and fell in love with each other.
Then, after the family moved to New Hampshire and she landed a teaching position in Concord, the couple welcomed their second child, Caroline. Christa had been fascinated with space and its correlation with education for quite some time, so when the opportunity arose for someone to teach from space, she applied.
Caroline wanted her mother to stay at home with her so that nothing wrong could happen. But, it did, in the worst of ways.
